The Memphis Grizzlies and Grizzlies Foundation were presented the Sport Team of the Year Award by Beyond Sport Founder and President, Nick Keller, at the Nov. 11 home game against the Miami Heat.
On July 25, 2012, the Grizzlies organization and the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation were named the winner of the prestigious Sport Team of the Year at the 2012 Beyond Sport Summit. The winner was revealed at a ceremony in London, England upon being named as one of 30 shortlisted organizations from almost 300 projects worldwide in early May.
The Grizzlies Community Investment team and the Grizzlies Foundation joined the Boston Celtics (United States), Queens Park Rangers FC (United Kingdom), Tottenham Hotspur (United Kingdom) and RIHP NTH QLD Rubies (Australia) as finalists in the “Sport Team of the Year” category.
The Grizzlies TEAM UP Youth Mentoring initiative, presented by Duncan-Williams, Inc., Grizzlies Read to Achieve, presented by International Paper, and Grizzlies Healthy Home Court initiatives, presented by Kellogg’s, were highlighted in this year’s application, as were partnerships with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, among others. Over 25,000 youth are served each year through these combined efforts and for thesecond time in team history, the Grizzlies led the NBA in community/marketing events in the local community.
The Grizzlies were also in attendance at the second annual Beyond Sport United at Yankees Stadium on Nov. 13, 2012. Beyond Sport United brings together the largest gathering of sports teams from around the world to address how they can do more to trigger positive social change in their communities.
Grizzlies Foundation Executive Director Jenny Koltnow, local owner and Foundation Vice-Chairman Elliot Perry and Grizzlies Community Investment Director Teresa Dickerson participated in Beyond Sports United. Koltnow and colleagues from the Boston Celtics, also a 2012 Beyond Sport “Sport Team” shortlisted team, made a presentation entitled “Overcoming Fear of Failure: Building Education Programs through Data-Metrics and Community Partnerships.” The two top teams discussed the bold steps and critical decisions made to re-shape their community programs to expand their investment in education, engage fans and achieve true community impact. United also spotlighted a joint interview with Keller and Koltnow during the daylong event.
